A (Temporary) Win for Immigrants

Since 1990, Temporary Protected Status has allowed migrants from other countries to remain in the U.S. without the fear of deportation. With this programs, many have been able to remain in the U.S. for years. Throughout the years, they've started their own businesses and families. In fact, many TPS beneficiaries are now green card holders as their children's have reached the aged to be able to petition on their behalf.

In the recent years, migration from Venezuela, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Ukraine, among other countries have continued to rise at a high rate due to various factors in their country's conditions. This year, USCIS, along with the Department of Homeland Security have published many Federal Register Notices in regards to TPS extensions for multiple countries. With these extensions, migrants are able to continue their stay in the U.S., including many Latinos who recently entered the U.S., such as those from Venezuela. This news can be seen as a temporary win for these migrants, as many who entered the U.S. were placed in removal proceedings.

Aside from TPS, the Department of State has also released an announcement regarding the Diversity Visa Lottery, which will make 55,000 green cards available to foreigners from certain countries who otherwise have low migration rates. Among those countries, 23 Latin countries will be eligible to apply for the lottery. Therefore, giving the possibility to Latinos to obtain a green card. Applications for this lottery will open October 4th through November 7th.
