Build that wall, again????

During the Trump Administration, there were various efforts to continue building a wall at the southern border. A major problem that would often halt this expansion was the variety of legal and environmental issues. Overall, Trump was successful in his attempt of continuing to build the wall.

During President Biden's campaign in 2020, he had pledged to stop building the wall at the southern border. However, on October 6th, 2023, it was announced that construction would once again begin in an effort to stop the mass migration issue occurring. In doing so, they have stated that they will be waving more than two dozen environmental policies, including Clean Air Act, Endangered Species Act, and many more. Although President Biden stated that it is not what his administration wants, he is entitled to comply with the law and use the move that was appropriated by Congress to build the wall.

As spoken about in my last blog, the Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas announced the extension and redesignation for Temporary Protected States (TPS) for Venezuela. This announcement came just weeks before news broke out regarding the construction of the wall. Although the extension of TPS for Venezuela is a massive win for Venezuelan immigrants, the reconstruction of the wall puts various communities in danger. Do you think the order of when the news broke out could have been a strategy for the Biden Administration? For example, giving the immigrant community one big win before announcing the continuation of construction for the wall.

  1. Hello Tania! I had no idea about the continuation of the wall building. That is extremely disheartening. Recently on TikTok I seen a video of a young mother trying to cross over crawling under an electric fence with her three year old toddler. I was almost in tears watching it because the toddler's shirt had got caught up in one of the wires. Thankfully they made it across safely, but I do not think that anyone should have to go through that in order to make life better for themselves and their families. I understand that there is a process to gaining citizenship, but I wish there was an easier way. Paying thousands of dollars and worrying about deportation is not the way to go. Hopefully, there is a stop put to building that wall soon, especially with the war in Israel going on right now.
