Major Political Shift with TelevisaUnivision, so what?

Back in January 2023, Televisa and Univision, two major spanish-speaking networks, closed their media merger for 4.8B. Within the Latino community, these two media outlets have become a primary source for Latinos to obtain news. With the merge, it now has the ability to reach over 100 million people each day, including those in the U.S. However, the merge has become extremely controversial due to the recent interview with former President Donald Trump.

The interview was aired on November 9th, being led by Enrique Acevedo. Major controversy arose after the public recognizing a lack of fact-checking for the former President. Additionally, it had seemed as TelevisaUnivision was attempting to sway the public in favor of Trump as they took a different approach in answering questions related to immigration and border policies. When asked about Latinos, Trump even stated that they are "incredible people." However, during his 2016 campaign Latinos were "rapists" and "bringing in drugs." In regards to Trumps response in immigration policies, the public and employees within the company became furious as Televisa news anchor, Acevedo, did not attempt to challenge Trump's response even after the recent plans Trump shared on mass deportation and giant camps. Therefore, various employees from Univision began questioning a major political shift and have left their job. Some employees have shared that the company is no longer challenging political candidates as they should be doing. Furthermore, it has been reported that TelevisaUnvision has cancelled advertisements and have pushed Trump ads in various states.

These acts become highly dangerous as there is already a lack of reliable Spanish-speaking news outlets for Latinos. Some have shared that Univision is becoming the "Latino Fox." There is no surprise that politicians from both parties understand the importance of obtaining Latino voters. However, it should not be fair to limit the amount of access of a specific political candidate and focus solely on one. It is important that Latinos are FULLY aware of the stances of all politicians to be able to make an informed decision. Many, including myself, fear how negatively it may impact Latinos' vote in 2024.

  1. This is extraordinarily informative and extremely concerning! As a non-native spanish speaker, would they (Latinos in general) have access to things such as a translated version of Ground.News or Allsides.com? Or are Latino voters more likely to get their news from a televised source? Its hard for the majority of Americans to get unbiased news, let alone a minority with significantly fewer reporting outlets. The Latino population is important to the fabric of this country and I agree that it is crucial that they "are FULLY aware of the stances of all politicians to be able to make an informed decision." i appreciate your bringing this issue to light, great post!

  2. That is an interesting find and one as a non-Latino voter would not think about when looking at how the political landscape is changing when it comes to how information is being given to voters where English is not their first language. While I think that there needs to be a more equal approach when it comes to how politics are reported, having a truly unbiased reporters would not be easy. If the government ran the news organization there would still be a slant towards the party in power there will never be an equal news station in our lifetime. But that brings me to my thoughts on businesses being able to conduct themselves in the way they want to. If there is to be the Latino Fox news its because Fox or another company has the money to fund a Latino news program and it just happens to be right leaning then that is okay in my opinion because the free market has dictated that its okay and the path that needs to be taken. Having a right leaning organization could cause some competition and a left leaning Latino could appear and enter the market.
Good and thought provoking blog post!
